Day 4 - 13th Nov 2014 - Things We Bet You Did Not Know About him

Every single Indian knows Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. It will be considered as a crime if you don’t know the man regarded as God. His autobiography 'Playing It My Way' was finally launched.

Here are few things we bet you didn't know about the master blaster that are mentioned in the book.

1. Wanted to be a fast Bowler – Sachin wanted to become a fast bowler for that he attended MRF Pace Academy which was run by the Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee. But lillee wasn’t impressed with his bow so he told him to focus on his batting instead.

2. Sachin is ambidextrous – He bats with his right hand but signs autographs and eats or plays table tennis with his left and he always puts on his left pad first.

3. Ball Boy In the 1987 World Cup – He was a ball boy during the 1987 World Cup. He watched the team playing close quarters during the semi-final. And, Sunil Gavaskar invited Tendulkar to the dressing room as well. 2 years later, he was part of Team India.

4. Sachin’s Debut was Dhawal’s Birthday – Yes, His last batting partner in Ranji cricket was Dhawal Kulkarni, who was born on November 15, 1989. The same day Sachin made his Test debut.

5. Reprimanded by Achrekar Sir Many Times – Sachin’s coach Ramakant Achrekar used reprimand him for his mistakes. On one occasion he slapped Sachin when he skipped his practice and instead came to watch his senior team play. Achrekar sir told Sachin:  "You should not be clapping for others. Others should clap for you."

6. Wins the coin as reward – Although he got punished by Achrekar Sir for his mistakes, but he used to get a coin from him whenever he batted through an entire session of nets without being dismissed. Today, Sachin has 13 such coins.

7. Bunked The First Three Days Of Mumbai Nets Former Mumbai cricketer Vasu Paranjpe introduced Sachin to Dilip Vengsarkar who was leading India at that time. Tendulkar faced Kapil Dev - India's best bowler at that time - with ease. So, vengsarkar was impressed by Tendulkar and asked the selectors to include him in the Mumbai Ranji team. But Tendulkar didn't turn up for the first three days of practice. As he had drawing exam hence couldn't come.

8. Anjali The Journalist – The first time Anjali went to Sachin's house she went as a journalist. She said at the book launch “I was not interested in cricket and did not even know who Sachin Tendulkar was when I first saw him. I found him cute”. He met her at the airport when he was 17. He was returning from a tour of England. Later she got married to him when he was 22.

9. His Sleep-Walking Sachin Made Ganguly and other team member An Insomniac – Tendulkar was Ganguly's roommate at the MRF Pace Academy. He used to walk in his sleep. Ganguly got worried about it and couldn't sleep at night. Also, as his roommate during his debut tour of Pakistan in 1989, Kiran More heard him shout more than once in his sleep: "Maro, maro, thats a four". Sachin calls Sourav Ganguly “Babu Moshai” while Ganguly calls him “Chhota Babu”.

10. Sachin had "a hundred or more" cortisone injectionsYou don’t play as long as Tendulkar without help from medical science. It started in 1993 when a painful wrist injury required a cortisone injection. “The injection, which was pretty painful, was the first of a hundred or more cortisone injections over the course of my career.” He even had three in one lunch break during a Test in South Africa in 1997.

11. Before the limos and Ferrari ... he used to take four buses to cricket practiceIn his first year at Shardashram cricket academy Sachin commute on four Mumbai buses and trains from his family home. “Anyone who has been on a Mumbai bus/train at peak times will know how difficult it is to get a seat or entry.” Bus conductors often charged him for two tickets as he carries the kit bag.

12. Missing out on becoming the youngest Test centurion made him crySachin reveals in his book that how he cried in New Zealand in 1990 when he fell just 12 runs short of his first century for India as he missed out to become the youngest ever centurion in Test history. He walked back to the pavilion unable to control his tears and cried for several minutes in the bathroom.

13. Music before the 2011 World Cup semi-final v PakistanHe listened to “Bade Achhe Lagte Hain” on his iPod for seven hours before the match in Mohali, which he describes as “one of the most pressurized games of my career”.

14. He doesn't like to be called a cheat – Sachin accused of ball tampering by English match referee, the late Mike Denness, on a tour to South Africa in 2001. He considered leaving the tour and explained he was only using his thumb to clean grass off the ball.

15. Ferrari ki sawari – Sachin’s Ferrari 360 Modena had a license plate number MH 01 AD 9999. He later sold it to a businessman from Surat but retained the number for his other car as he considers it lucky for himself! He was so possessive about his Ferrari that wife Anjali is not allowed to drive it.

16. He once fielded for Pakistan as a substitute during a practice match against India at the Brabourne Stadium in 1988.

17. His first TVC was for Band Aid.

18. His daughter Sara is named after the first tournament he won as captain: the 1997 Sahara Cup.

19. He was awarded champagne for his maiden Test ton in Manchester in 1990. But British rules didn't allow those under 18 to drink, so he waited 8 years and popped it at Sara's first birthday in 1998.

20. He was without a bat contract until the start of the 1996 Cricket World Cup. At the end of the tournament, a famous tire manufacturer sponsored his willow.

21. He went to watch the movie Roja in 1995 with a beard and disguise. It all went wrong when his glasses fell off and the crowd in the cinema hall recognized him.

22. He used to sleep with his cricket gear during his junior days.

23. His first car was a Maruti-800.
